Houzz Tour: A Gin Distillery Turned Bachelor Pad

Houzz Tour: A Gin Distillery Turned Bachelor Pad | SAN ANTONIO HOMES TODAY | Scoop.it
This North London canal-side apartment — part of a former gin distillery — dates back to 1894, but a bland redevelopment in the 1990s had created a rabbit warren of rooms. “It was very tired and dated when the owner bought it,” recalls designer Cassidy Hughes. “The layout was confused, and it had poky rooms and very little character.” The sociable owner wanted a contemporary space in which to live and work, with plenty of room for entertaining. “We completely opened up the kitchen...

Oh, Deer! 10 Native Flowers That Stand Up to the Herds

Oh, Deer! 10 Native Flowers That Stand Up to the Herds | SAN ANTONIO HOMES TODAY | Scoop.it
Sometimes our garden leaves us wanting to give up and write a “Deer John” letter, especially if it hosts a half dozen Bambis every evening. Sprays and powders are a waste of money, because they sure don’t seem effective, but who can afford 8-foot-tall fences? We have to live with deer, and there’s no way to predict what they’ll do — maybe their population puts pressure on them to try new plants, maybe it’s a bad winter, maybe they got a taste of palatable young shoots and decided it’s...
Al Cannistra's insight:

My deer prefer bananas, apples, lettuce - whatever comes from the refrigerator. When I first moved here, I spent the day planting over 100 nice plants out front; by morning - gone. Deer were well fed and happy. I was not happy - but maybe a little smarter!

My Houzz: Austin Couple Put Their Stamp on a Bright New Home | SAN ANTONIO HOMES TODAY | Scoop.it
In 2006 Zack Avila, a fifth-grade math and science teacher, and his wife, Robin, a graphic designer, decided to take a chance on a new development of modern architect-designed homes in the Agave neighborhood of East Austin, Texas. It was a bit of a risk to be one of the first buyers, but Zack, who has a degree in architecture from the University of Colorado, says, “I was very excited to see the modern homes at such reasonable asking prices.” The two were very involved with...
