![]() Innocent Italian-Americans got caught in the crosshairs of a bigoted mob.
Al Cannistra's insight:
Can’t say the “N” word unless you are Black – but I guess you can still legally say the “D” word – and, since I am half Italian, I can say Dagoe anyway. Today’s shared article looks back to the largest lynching in American history. It seems that lynching was of Italians. Surprised? . In my growing years, I heard the references to my German – Italian family – Dagoes and Krauts, and about Irish families, and Jewish families and more – all of which had labels of one kind or another. Did not really pay too much attention – most everybody was friends anyway, browns and blacks included. Besides, if you worked it out right, you got good food on a variety of holidays! Sometimes there were neighborhood fights – which soon settled down and people went back to work and earned a living – or back to school. There were no entitlements and expectations. You took care of your own – and helped others too. You did not burn down buildings and get crazy. . Even worse than being Italian – my “Italian side” was half Sicilian. You probably have heard the stories of the Chicago and New York families – yeah, I lived it. Read about THAT in this article – but they do not do an adequate job on that part.. . Fast forward to the 21st Century… Nobody in those groups wants reparation for things that happened yesterday – things far MORE RECENT than others are whining about. What happened then has nothing to do with now. What happened hundreds of years ago, has nothing to do with now. What you do today is going to matter going forward and may have unintended results.
